I think it would be the vaccine mainly because it has saved he lives of millions of people since it's ivention by Louis Pasteur. AIlments like Cholera and Polio have a cure now because of this miracle medicine. It also continues to become more and more advanced. Sometime in the near future there may even be vaccines for AIDs and Malaria.

I'll throw in my opinion: the electrical generator.

Anyway, the steam engine. Ultimately virtually everything in the world we know today relies to some greater or lesser extent on boiling water.

I would also have to say the steam engine. Helping to spread people, food, natural resources, and ideas more effectively and not to mention leading to the development of modern transportation.

Television. The psychological impact on the human race being able to see - nay, almost 'experience' - almost any part of the world has been immense. Besides this, we now know what is happening at the other side of the planet 24 hours a day. How we see our fellow human-beings affects how we for our own identity.

The steam engine was an important invention but it surely isn't the most important. There were other ways of powering things. Hydro power. Animal power. And now a days the steam engine isn't in considerable use(but it still is in use). It was just a link to get from ancient methods of power to the modern combustion engine.

The steam engine doesn't have the qualifications for the greatest invention ever.
