"Vinegar Tom" - the familiar of a supposed Witch that Matthew Hopkins had killed. Tom was either a cat or some greyhound type creature.
Either way, the accused was no Witch. Merely an old woman who had been deprived of sleep for some time - an effective tool at extracting hokey confessions.

there have been several newfoundlands who have rescued people throughout history. napoleon was reportedly saved by a fisherman's newfie.
another was :
In 1828, the Harvey family, a respected family well known in the history of Newfoundland, with the aid of their Newfoundland dog, "Hairyman", rescued 163 people from the "Despatch", shipwrecked on the rocks off Isle aux Morts. from this site: Dogs In History
newfoundlands have saved people with little to no training at all..

No such thing as bad dogs--just bad owners.
