The World's largest genocide?

What is known as the largest genocide in history? Was it the Holocaust? Is it all the killing in Africa now?

It is arguable whether it counts as genocide, but I think with regards to numbers "The Great Leap Forward" in Communist China was the largest genocide in world history. It is impossible to know the true numbers because every single aspect of the GLF was lied about, but now it is estimated at somewhere over 30 million people.

The Great Leap Forward was not an order to execute all those 30 million people, but rather an economic plan that was so poorly executed those 30 million starved to death.

There were at least 20,000,000 people killed in the Soviet Union from 1918 to 1945. The Nazis were small taters when compared to the Communists.

I would in a reasonable short amount of time as the holocaust...it was the largest genocide that killed a large amount of people in a shortened amount of time. Also the extremity of the genocide commited, large open tortures were commited. I agree that the Great Leap Forward was the largest genocide, but as it was stated before it was economic. The holocaust was hard, cold-blooded, massive killling.

Let's not forget the crimes committed against the Native Americans.
Ever since the white settlers arrived in America they launched one campaign of extermination after another, especially after they discovered gold in the West.

There is a differnce between mass murders and genocide. The distruction of the native cultures in the new world easily head the list of a group of people being killed solely because of race, religion, etc. For mass murder, hats off to Mao.

How about the African slave trade, which ran (officially) from the 15th to the 19th centuries?

It wasn't actually purely genocide directly, but the whole cynical and vicious exploitation, physical, mental and emotional torture and abuse by many European nations, plus N.America later, surely equates to something as serious and odious?
