| Re: The New World!
Government, industries, and powerful people do tend to walk all over ordinary folks given half a chance. This is hardly a modern phenomenon. It probably dates back a million years or so to the invention of 'walking' -- before that, they would have had to 'crawl', 'slither', or 'ooze' over ordinary folk. But Australia does seems a bit more civilized than the US, with a better social safety net, less of a gulf between the rich and the middle class, and a greater chance for ordinary people to become rich.
I've often wondered about this. And my Aussie friends did too. The last time I was in Oz, a pilot near Bright asked, "What is it about you Americans? Why is your country so strange?"
I thought this over, then replied, "You've got to remember. Your country was settled by convicts. Our country was settled by religious fanatics. You guys got the better bargain!"
