In this case it's simple to find wars without catholic powers involved ... it's enough to think to the period of the expansion of the Roman Republic or Empire ... Rome won, but it wasn't the Catholic Rome ...

So, I guess there is also a temporal window for this thread: the "Catholic Age".

In the age of the Roman Church, actually, the First Crusade [First military Crusade] is a good candidate, in fact the Crusade had leaded by Lords [and not very important Lords, to say all], not by proper powers [the Crusade of the Kings was still to come].
