I started reading philosophy in my teens, with Plato, Seneca and Montaigne. Since then I read whatever philosophy comes my way, sometimes with and sometimes without system.Between my favorites are Aristotel, Thomas Aquinas, Averroes /Ibn Rushd/, Heideger, Hanna Arendt and Sartr.

I don't quite understand any type of philosophy, except for Epicureanism, but I'm hoping to learn. I got started into philosophy this past Christmas when i bought Essentials of Philosophy by James Mannion.

Anna, thanks for inviting me in all these social groups, though I'm not sure I understand their purpose of functioning outside the normal forum threads.

I see them as place to share sources, which are after this easy to find just browsing the group, instead or rummaging through all the threads one wrote in /if happened to me/ when needing a particular source. Also, it may be used as a place to try out new ideas before going with them on the threads where one can find himself/herself bashed down and accused in illiteracy, or whatever motives /which also happened to me/. Basically, it can be used as a preparation for a thread, or just asking a question among people that share the same interest, and feel comfortable with each other. On the normal threads everyone can jump in eveywhere and the competitiveness sometimes goes so high that the informative value of a topic can be lost in mere bickering and talking completely out of tune; in the social groups I hope such things would be avoided and more friendly and understanding attitudes can be adopted.

I haven't read this one, Qymaen. Would you tell me your opinion of it when you are through with it?

I'm nearly finished with it. All it does, is give the basic rundown of different philosophies and how they relate to other, earlier, philosophies with a little dry humor mixed in. Mannion also dedicates an entire chapter to the three Abrahamic religions along with discussing the Reformation, the Enlightenment, etc. Overall it's a pretty good book for beginners in the area of Philosophy.

Mannion said Spock represents the Objectivists whilst Kirk represents Humanists, but I'll have to reread the book to give a full answer.
