Michiel de Ruyter wasn't the only one called Bestevaer. Tromp was too. It just means "Grandfather" in old Dutch. A nice term of endearment for a man who looks after his sailors and those serving under him.

Sadly, this character doesn't seem to have many redeeming qualities - at least at a surface level.
