It wasn't that good...
As a boy, I read everything that Heinlein wrote. And, I believe that this and "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" as a distant second are the only novels that stood the test of time.
Even my favorite back then "Stranger in a Strange Land," turns out old RAH as a somewhat ignorant and bigoted lout regarding life and religion.
Most of the rest of his books (and mind you, I Loved Heinlein) disappoint tremendously when viewed through "adult eyes." I suspect if Robert would have had the Internet, he would not have obsessed quite so much on soft core porn and maybe had a few more characters other than the Wise old Man; the incredible intelligent and sexual heroine; and the dufus guy Hero who just happens to be loved in spite of himself...
Ahh... but - I did love them so...

The movie was good although a shame they didn't have the budget for both bugs and power armour

Just as well, given it's a monthly publication.
Have to say, I didn't rely on Heinlein for soft porn. Were you at boarding school?

It was a different world. I believe I received my first real sex education from "Farnam's Freehold."

What? That to be really satisfying sex has to be in a crowded air raid shelter during a nuclear attack, with your son's wife?
Hope that didn't get you into trouble later on.

Just watched the third film last night, at last we have the power armour and Johnny Rico is back. The religion side of things was a bit unexpected and if anything the federation seems to have slid further into facism. But they are fighting a winner takes all war, in it for the species so to speak.
