Books on Islamic History.

I'm starting to attempt to understand the history of Islam. Any suggestions would be welcome.

New Cambridge History of Islam is a great, if heavy, place to start.

André Miquel's L'Islam et sa civilisation. I don't know if it's translated in English. I read it in Romanian. It had two volumes in that version.

New Cambridge History of Islam is certainly great but at £1,500.00 it should be and André Miquel's L'Islam et sa civilisation in French is beyond me but thank you for the information.

You can also start with the Qu'ran.

I attempted to order "Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes by Tamim Ansary"

Amazon replied as follows.
"Sorry, this item can't be shipped to your selected address. Learn more. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order. You can also see if this item is available to ship to your address from another seller."

Does anyone know what this means or don't they like Tamim Ansary?

I received a contrite reply from Amazon and have just re-ordered the books and so far it looks as though the order was accepted. Strange things computers.

A friend at Oxford told me about a series the Oxford University Press is publishing within which are, “Islam A very short Introduction” and “Islamic History A Very Short Introduction” and I went into Oxford, looked at them and bought them. They reallyare worth looking at as a start to the subject.

Not sure about books, but if you want something to listen to, there's a podcast on the history of islam. Haven't checked it out myself but i do believe I've heard good things about it.
