A People's History of the United States [8 v.] (McGraw-Hill, 19761987)

No notes. We don't need no stinkin' distractions.

No biblio. This is Mister Smith's narrative (eight volumes of story telling)

Very readable. Better than heavy-scholar Oxford works.

Full disclosure: I am selling all my Oxford book stock. I prefer more readable and American.

For the colonial era, I recommend David Hackett Fischer's book Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America.

Nizam, I think that you could learn a lot from reading the textbook The American Pageant from Jax Historian's link. However, The American Pageant does only a mediocre job of explaining the events leading to the American Civil War. The American Pageant and most or all other American History textbooks portray antebellum white southerners as supporting the institution of slavery strictly for economic reasons. In reality, antebellum white southerners' support of slavery was only half economic. The other half of the reason that antebellum white southerners supported slavery was to maintain white supremacy. The best book that covers why antebellum white southerners supported slavery is The Secessionist Impulse: Alabama and Mississippi in 1860 by William Barney. I also recommend James McPherson's book Battle Cry of Freedom for its coverage of the American Civil War.
