Durant - Story of Civilization

I am hardly through the first volume but I am in love with this set. Durant writes with such a beautiful flow. Finishing the 11 volume series this year is an absolute must for me. I am learning so much. This series is a great "fill in the knowledge gaps" set of books and so much more. I can't wait to get to Greece and Rome.

The complexity of Egypt, the violence of Assyria, the decadence of Babylon,..... I am so impressed with what I am learning and the fun I am having. Durant feels like a friend to me. Dan Carlin, my favorite pod caster, loves Durant's work and I see why.

Great set of books by a talented pair of historians. To set a goal of reading the full set in order within a single year is ... laudable. Most folks, I think, read one or two vol. straight through, and then use the set as an occasional reference. For instance, you find your interest attracted to some new bit of history, so going to the Durants may become the foundation for your further studies. It is far, far better than Wikkii.

These sets are cheap at local used book stores. I may take the leap based on your review.

Well written. I always enjoy them as quick surveys on a theme. If I want more in a particular topic, then I find something more up to date.

The lifetime the Durant's spent working on the series is a story in of itself!

I am mostly through China, 720 pages in and I love it like page 1. This is simply incredible. I cant wait to get to vol 2 on Greece. I am learning so much. I just learned about socialism vs. communism 1000 years ago in China.
I will give my best review on this volume when I finish it.

I chase interests with direct investment in hardcover books. Far, far better than Wikkii.
