George Orwell - Looking Back on the Spanish War

This essay is worth an hour's read for those with a historical interest in a good writer's look back on his experiences fighting in the Trotskyist POUM during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's. The essay was apparently written in 1940 and published in 1943. It is in the book

This particular essay is also of possible interest to those interested in next weeks Historum Discussion of Animal Farm. At least I found some interesting insights into that novel that I've recently read. Curiously enough, I also found some interesting parallels betwen this essay, along with another, England Your England, and Upton Sinclair's novel Jimmie Higgins. The latter is one of Sinclair's later and lesser novels about a Socialist Candidate for president. (That was written not long after Sinclair's unsuccessful run for California Governor.)

Definitely worth a read, IMO

I recently had Hommage to Catalonia recommended to me. Isn't that also about his SCW experiences?

Homage to Catalonia is a fantastic book. I've read it several times, it is really interesting. I was put off Orwell at an early age by his very depressing novels, so I didn't read this book until about ten years ago. I wish I'd read it sooner, as it is absolutely marvellous. Anyone at all interested in the Spanish Civil War should read it. Or even if you're not. It's such a good book.
