Those are both cases of the restoration of proper names following a relatively short interlude. That's one thing, it's quite another to change names that are either centuries old or have no prior "true" name.
Moreover, that is hardly limited to the US either. "Welsh" originally means "stranger" or "foreigner" but nobody (except themselves) call them Cymri.
Besides that, toponymics are hardly the only arena of historical distortion ...
