The End of Sparta

Has anyone read Victor Hanson's The End of Sparta yet?

Would like to hear some opinions before I jump through the hoops it takes to get new books in Bangkok.

Yep. Especially Epaminondas' role in Thebes beating Sparta & liberating the helots. It's actually fictional, told from the POV of a soldier fighting under Epaminondas.

Here's an interview w/ the author about the book.

Just went to Amazon and read some reviews. A reader states that the book starts off by describing Sparta as the worst slave state that ever existed..much like a 200 year version of Nazi, Germany. Seeing as how that isn't anything like the system of helotage that we know, I will probably avoid it.

Good(if prone to hero-worshipping the West)writer of history books. This is a novel. And because of that hero-worship,he tends to smear and blackens everything which doesn't fit into his idealised vision of West(Sparta,Alexander the Great,Napoleon etc).Highly ironic and hypocritical, given that he is an unabashed imperialist and militarist.

And judging by reviews,it's pretty boring and dry(and,as Okamido points out rather inaccurate in some aspects;highly strange coming from a historia, but I already explained the reasons).
