Pratchett is/was awesome, I'm not a fan of the wizard stuff but guards is great and I've just finished the amazing Maurice.

No Deals, Mr Bond - John Gardner.

I'll have more history to read soon anyway.

Re-reading Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader: North Korea and the Kim Dynasty by Bradley Martin. I remember it being a pretty good read, which is good because it is a HUGE book.

I'm re-reading Robert Mason's superb "Chicken Hawk" which is an autobiography of his days as a 1st Air Cav Huey pilot in Vietnam from 1965-67. This book has perennially made almost any critic's Top Five or Top Ten list of Best Books about Vietnam.

That said, that war is probably my favorite to read and study about. Other favorite books from it are Phil Caputo's "A Rumor of War"...as well as Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried."

Oh....given my avatar, along with the fact I am planning to re-read it after I finish Chicken Hawk, I'd be remiss if I did not mention Joseph Heller's Catch-22!

Elizabeth 1 by Margaret George... I quite like this novel, it's fairly historically accurate... and HUGE.

I just finished this -

Click the image to open in full size.

It's 267 pages of mostly despair, like so much "history as it happens" is.

My feeling was one of relief at having not been there.

Dope makes everything worse - especially when so much is messed up to begin with.

I am rereading i ) Stalingrad- The Fateful Siege : 1942-1943 by Antony Beevor, published by Penguin Books 1999,ISBN 978-0-14-028458-4. and ii ) Russia's War A History of the Soviet War Effort : 1941-1945 by Richard Overy, published by Penguin Books 1998, ISBN 978-0-14-027169-0.
Both are splendidly written and deserve rereading. Highly recommended.
