It is a futuristic dystopian novel, but at several points I am reminded of Theodore Dreiser's Cowperwood Trilogy, of incidents in Ida Tarbell's History of Standard Oil. Seems like fear of laissez faire capitalism is alive and healthy, and maybe that's a good thing.

Thomas Bulfinch's The Age of Fable: Or Beauties of Mythology; more or less a primer for those interested in Greco-Roman mythology, though it does contain some Eastern and Germanic-Scandinavian tales as well. Excellent, very entertaining book for those new to the subject as well as those who've read the Virgilian and Homeric epics. Highly recommended.

Non-fiction, and a sometimes dark memoir but important. Russell Snyder (ex US Army PSYOPS) documents his experiences as the assistant team leader of a three-man US Army Tactical Psychological Operations* Team (TPT), supporting the US Marine Corps’ 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, and 32rd Battalion, 25th Marines in Iraq during 2005. Operating along the Euphrates river valley in western Iraq’s Anbar desert, Sergeant Snyder saw some of the “most vicious counterinsurgency fighting on Operation Iraqi Freedom since Fallujah”.

A critique of Stalinism by a soviet military journalist, set during the German invasion of the USSR in WWII. So far it is very good.
