Taking in account leakbrewergator's feedback by pm on Eri Hotta, I've made a short list about Japan during WWII:

-Eri Hotta : Japan 1941 and Pan Asianism and Japan's War
- Bernard C. Nalty: Pacific War
- Wooley: Geography and Japan's Strategic Decisions
- Goldstein and Dillon : The Pacific War Papers Japonese Documents of WWII
-Peter Wetzler: Hirohito and war in imperial tradition
- Rana Mitter: China's War With Japan (1937-1945)

With will take me a while, to get in this cycle, but when it starts, I will post some reviews.

Are you referring to the 'Saga of the Samurai' series by Terje Solum?

Anybody have recommendations for books that focus on Japanese history around the 1850s-60s? I'm looking for more reading material on Japan between the arrival of Commodore Perry to the end of the Boshin War.

Yes indeed. They seem to cost a fortune on Amazon or are sold out. This would be a nice book series to have.

Yeah, they are pretty pricey. The author just started selling them on Amazon himself. Keep checking and you might get lucky and he'll post some. You can try his direct website too. Shipping is pretty expensive, though.

Does anybody know English-language sources that discuss the Kaientai company/navy founded by Sakamoto Ryoma? I'm aware of the book 'Sakamoto Ryoma and the Meiji Restoration' by Marius Jansen but I'm just on the lookout for anything else that might cover the topic.

Thanks.

It says that shipping is over $9 but I have to make an account on some Swedish website or something. I'm not sure if they ship to Canada.
