Would you say Turnbull is stronger on religious matters, as opposed to military matters?

On a side note, he's supposed to be a lecturer at the university I've applied for, but I can't seem to track him down; perhaps he's left. Would've been interesting to have had a few lectures with him

I don't know if I would say that. I just like this book better than most of his other work. I think HE would tell you he's more of an expert in military matter than in anything else.

On the final chapter of Morris' The World of the Shining Prince, so I'll do a mini-review of that later in the week Could do some books on Sino-Japanese relations too if they fit the bill.

Brief Description- Turnbull deals with the most famous women in Japan's history like Hojo Masakado, Tomoe Gozen, Hangaku Gozen and Ueno Tsuruhime and their exploits during peace and wartime; unfortunately some of these female figures lie on the verge between authenticity and myth and several episodes are therefore quite obscure. The plates displaying the ladies' wear in feudal Japan can be interesting though.
