Re: Favorite historian

Hmm good question!

Can't honestly think of my favourite historian.. favourite archaeologist though on the other hand is clearly the American Carl Blegen. Known for his excavations at Hisarlik (Troy), Corinth, Palace of Nestor (at Pylos), among many many others.

William C. Davis & Stephen L. Hardin are two that I bend a knee in praise.

I am a big fan of Tacitus, Livy, Polybius, and Thucydides.

They count, right?

yay go Laybourn, ILP rules.

For me probly S. R. Gardiner and Esme Whigfield-Strafford.

Gardiner for his ability to paint a picture in words and Strafford for the fact his ability to cut through pre-held conviction.

Matthias Gelzer.

I might venture to say Colleen McCullough. Granted, her books are historical fiction, but they are accurate as heck, and if 13 years of scholarly research doesn't qualify her, nothing does. I learned more about Ancient Roman politics from her books than all the history books on the subjec I've read put together.

All historians bring out the seismologist in me; I love to study faults.
