This opened up the ancient world for me:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Warfare-Classical-World-Encyclopedia-Civilizations/dp/0312856148/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1389386462&sr=1-3&keywords=warfare+in+the+classical+world+by+john+ warry"]Warfare in the Classical World: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Weapons, Warriors, and Warfare in the Ancient Civilizations of Greece and Rome: John Gibson Warry: 9780312856144: Amazon.com: Books@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5125Ssi2uvL.@@AMEPARAM@@5125Ssi2uvL[/ame]

and despite the bad rap he gets here from time to time, this is one of the very first books on the samurai that I had, so I still have a soft spot for it.

Looks interesting and the price looks good. As it was an introductory piece for you, would you still recommend it to other people already versed in history?

It is a memoir called Red China Blues. As close to Maoist China as you can get. It is cheerful and often times grim.
