Cloudspitter, by Russell Banks, is a fine book about him. Russell Banks also wrote Affliction, the Sweet Hereafter and several others. Those three have the Unclefred seal of approval.

In describing John Brown as crazy you need to be more specific, what diagnosis in modern terms. Certainly the people that supported and followed him didn't think him crazy. My own impression is that he was delusional about his own abilities. In short, he was incompetent as a military leader as his decisions around the raid demonstrate.

As for a movie, that is too much for Hollywood to handle. Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys?

At the centennial in 1959 no one at the National Park Service was willing to try to stage an observance. Still too hot after 100 years.

As for Raymond Massey as John Brown that was Santa Fe Trail starring Errol Flynn as James Ewell Brown Stuart in 1940.

I have heard of Banks, but I've not read him. Cloudspitter... interesting title. Thanks for heads up on the books.

I'll second that, excellent book. Historical Fiction but very well researched. I live near Hudson Ohio where the beginning of the book took place, so I loved the local references.

There was a play about him, and I took part in it when I was nine, but who wrote it and what it was called I don't know.

I've never heard of a 'black' calling him crazy.
