Science Fiction you are allowed 1 impossible/improbable premise, it's where you go from there, is it an interesting thoughtful from there.

Sure I guess but then there are the people who actually think this was possible or accurate.

Indeed, not directly related, I recall some years ago the TV series "FlashForward". I didn’t like or found probable the initial premise, where all the people of the planet loose conscience for some seconds. But I really like the development of the show. Unfortunate it had only one season.

If you told people in Europe that Germany would conquer Paris, Warszaw and many other capitals just in a few years and millions people will be exterminated in death camps they told you are insane.
It became reality in a few moments.

Because it was feasible. How will the Japanese cross the Pacific? How will Germany cross the Atlantic without so much as a fleet?

If you can sail all the way to Hawaii, you can sail all the way to the US. If the US had stayed out thr war, and Nazis had developed their atomic bomb, and planes to deliver them, they could have blackmailed the US into surrendering. An isolationist America would have had planes that would not been able to match tne axis, and the Nazis were working on intercontinental bombers. A Britain that lost the battle of Britain, and the Nazis conquered it, no Manhatan project, probably no Pearl Harbor to wake up America in tkme, Roosevelt dying sooner and being replaced with a less competent President, and onw not as committed to supporting Britain, as Roosevelt, and so Britain fell under the Nazis onslaught, it might all be possible in ways you can't image.

1. Roosevelt is not President, dies of the stroke that killed him years earlier, or even dies of polio

2. Say a pro German like Lindberg became president. It was possible, he was famous and popular

3. US stays out of the war, and does not support Britains war effort.

4. Britain falls to Germany. (Maybe no Churchill, perhaps he died years earlier in the Boer War). With Britain the way, Germany can concentrate on the Soviet Union and defeats it. Instead of exterminating tne Slavs, and others, the Nazis work at protraying themselves as liberators of Russian and Communist oppressiom. Many Ukranians did fight for the Nazis, wkth a little more diplomacy, perhaps they could convinced even more tl join them. Many initially did not fight tnr Nazis very hard until tney realized the Nazis were even worse. The Soviets pleas to fight for communism fell a lot on deaf ears, it was only when they appealed tl fight for mother Russia that people began to fight.

Part of the success of Brtian in the battle of Britain was tnat before tne war they had set up their radar network, which made their planes more effective. Without radar and this radar network, the air battle might havd gone differently. Perhaps King Edward did not abdicate, and with him on the throne, things might have gone a different way.

The point of the story it happened, and many believed it could have happened, whether likely or not. One of the best Star [B]Trek Original Series episodes, City on the Edge of Forever, postulates that by an Enterprise crew member changing one event, tne Nazis eventually win WW2, and the Federatkon never happened. What the story explores is what it would be like if it did happen.

Germany defeats Britain and takes over the Royal Navy? Mers-el-Kébir doesn't happen, Germany gets access to the entire French fleet? Germany places mobile v2 rockets on it's ships, places biological weapons onto them then pounds the US into submission? Maybe the Germans invent the funniest joke in the world and decide to use joke warfare? There are numerous fun ways to imagine Germany defeating the US.

Butterflies and handwavium are the meat and drink of alternate history. The worst type of AH tries to explain every twist and turn--the better ones let the reader fill in the blanks.
Anyone with a decent grasp of history can engineer plenty of scenarios where the US turns pacifist in the 1920--as indeed it partially did or have a Britain that decided that acquired a fascist government in the 1930s or a defeatist one in 1940. Or what would the world look like after a bellicose USA had decided to solve the Depression by implementing "Plan Red" in 1932?
It's all a bit of fun.
