What did you guys think of the new Sherlock Holmes film? - Historum

How does it compare to earlier incarnations? And why didn't Holmes wear his deer-stalker hat in this movie?

Can't compare it to others, having not seen any, but I generally liked the film.

I thought it was going to be horrible until near the end, when they revealed to the audience all the tricks and how nothing supernatural ever happened.

I thought it was going to just be another superstition movie with special effects.

At the end I was quite appreciative that the movie let the audience know they had been fooled.

It was rubbish.

Hated it the only saving grace was Jude Law as Dr Watson, which is odd as i normally hate him.

As for the deer stalker that is only a modern addition one of the actors who played Holmes on TV (not sure who) wore it and this has become part of the Holmes ledgend.

I can't remember to well but did the film touch on Holmes drug habit??? (shooting up cocaine i think)

Mr. Ritchie took an established character(s) & painted them into more modern day action heroes.
Law as Watson was a mis-cast. Wrong ages
Downey, Jr. as Holmes was believable, and well done, but the Kung-Fu style fighting was misplaced.
The story plot was a bit of a stretch to believe as well. But, overall, I thought it was a decent movie, not great, but enjoyable.

I agree adams. Hugh Laurie as Watson; axe the king fu and you would have a better film, IMO.

Ironically:a film debunking the occult using a leading spiritualist writer's works is rather funny. Most folks don't know Sir A.C. Doyle was a big proponent of the psychic and ghostly phenomenon.

It's more of a spin-off than a remake as it was set sometime after the early books were written (Irene Adler is from A Scandal in Bohemia), but before Moriarty's death (Final Problem)
