I never saw the original 1930's one, but I did see the 1970's PBS remake and thought it did a pretty good job of translating the novel onto the silver screen.

I only saw the 1970s of OQOTWF,never knew about the 1930s movie.
Also,is there a current OQOTWF being made?

I've seen, & shown, the original 1930 version as well as the Richard Thomas 1979 version. How many times must Hollywood tinker with this till they totally smudge it beyond recognition.

I see that they are using an Titanic captain as a cast member,going too be hard to take it seriously.
I will watch it,you wont know if it is good or bad without seeing it in the first place.
Hollywood does not wanna let go of the past for some reason!

I'm actually interested in watching a version, hopefully the original if I can find a copy, because I remember studying the novel and really enjoying it. Remakes usually don't do the original version justice at all.

Seen both versions and wasn't impressed by either, although on balance the earlier version was better (if only for being in monochrome, more atmospheric). Then again I'm not enamoured of the story. A better WWI German book-to-film in my view, would be Ernst Junger's "Storm of Steel"
