There are a lot of DVDs out covering many early periods of Chinese history - many highly fictionalised but with amazing action scenes.
To add, watched a bit of this last night on SBS TV (in Oz) but missed the end: Curse of the Golden Flower An epic tale of lust and power set in the opulent world of the later Tang Dynasty. Directed by Zhang Yimou and stars Chow Yun-fat, Gong Li and Jay Chou Zhang, this is the first film that Zhang collaborated with Gong Li after their 10-year separation.
Anyone have any favourites?

Red Cliff is my favorite, though I would probably have loved it even more if they went further in the direction of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

I saw curse of the golden flower when it came out at cinema, didn't think much of it. I kind of Chinese I Claudius. A very similar movie is Banquet.
My favourite Chinese movies are Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Warrior, Rouge, House of Flying Daggers and a Chinese Ghost Story.

A good historical Chinese film is The Emperor and the Assassin by director Chen Kaige. It is about an attempt to kill Shi Huangdi. | | |

I like Red Cliff as well. To Live is also good as it shows the Chinese community throughout various stages. Although, I wouldn't necessarily call it an historical film.

Has anyone seen "the Warlords" with Jet Li? Loved that one as well, it is set in the 19th century.

Red Cliff was indeed amazing. I liked especially the portrayal of Zhuge Liang.

Curse of the Golden Flower is in no way historically accurate.
