Downton Abbey

The 2010 British series "Downton Abbey"
starring:
Hugh Bonneville
Elizabeth McGovern and
Jim Carter

A drama set in pre-WWI England and centered on the dramas of the Crawley family and their servants.

Anyone else watching this?

Yes, I watched this, and found it quite enjoyable, the basic story is plausible, and it centres around the characterization, with some good acting. The house that it is set in is an absolutely amazing pile, an almost surreal construction that was also used in some of the episodes of the Fry/Laurie version of the Jeeves stories. Having just had the roof of my little house repaired at vast expense, I'm heartily glad that I'm not responsible for the upkeep of a place like that!

Yes, we're watching. I prefer Doc Martin, though.

The house belongs to the Carnarvon family, of the King Tut fame. When I first saw the house, I thought it was a hotel.

It's a crazy Victorian building. Probably only has a hundred bedrooms.

Second the motion -- remember the sad fate of "Spotted Jim"? Also recommend the movie "Keeping Mum", starring "Blackadder" as a vicar.

So people will gain their idea of English history from Blackadder, of the English social system from Jeeves, and of the English character from Mr Bean. No wonder people have strange ideas about this country.
