Channel One (Russia) and "Twentieth Century Fox C.I.S" presents new russian historical movie - Admiral Kolchak (2008).

Release date: November 2008 (Russia)

Cast:
Konstantin Khabensky (Admiral Kolchak)
Barbara Brylska
Egor Beroev
Sergei Bezrukov

Aleksandr Vasiliyevich Kolchak (1874 -- February 7, 1920) was a Russian naval commander, polar explorer and later head of part of the anti-Bolshevik "White forces" during the Russian Civil War.
One of the best historical films in my opinion.

Does anyone remember a film called (I think) "Johnny Went to War"?

It was about an American boy who gets terribly mutilated, loses his arms and legs, as well as his sight and eventually manages to fid a way to ask the nurse to kill him (by rhythmic breathing in Morse code). I saw it very long ago, but still remember it as probably the most horrifying film I've ever seen.

I do remember the name, although I have not watched it yet, it is called "Johnny got his gun".

Yes, that was it, thank you! I'm not sure if I recommend watching it.
It's an excellent war film, though.

As a point of trivia the film was pinched by metallica who used it as the background to 'one' from '...and justice for all' album

A Very Long Engagement is a very good movie. It doesn't depict events of the war quite as well as other mentioned here (although it spare nothing when it comes to the brutality of the war) but it tells a great story and the whole thing is just pure art. It's less a war movie about WW1 than it is a movie set during WW1 but it's worth a look.

You're right, I recognize these scenes. Don't think I want to watch it again.

Watched All quiet on the western front last night, fantastic movie. I read a little about it and found out because of it's pacifist views it was banned in Germany until the mid 50s and the lead actor was boycotted for years.

The bunker scene is now one of my favorite moments of cinema.

Though a great film, it's perhaps the most depressing one I've ever watched.

It also gave me the idea to invent the "Johnny scale", useful for measuring how miserable a film was, when discussing it with friends.
