Is number 1 the best one? If so, I'd go along with your choice.

Yes, number one is the best.

Necessarily very subjective (but no politics as requested )

With a few exceptions, I don't really like typical war-movies (battle scenes etc.) so the films listed are usually meaningful in other ways. All concern World War II, though.

1 Come and See (USSR, 1985)
2 Roza (Poland, 2012)
3 The Pianist (USA, 2002)
4 Katyń (Poland, 2007)
5 The Cranes Are Flying (USSR, 1960)
6 The Passenger (Poland, 1963)
7 The Ascent (USSR, 1978)
8 Sophie Scholl (Germany, 2005)
9 Saving Private Ryan (USA, 1998)
10 A Bridge Too Far (UK, 1977)

1. Band of Brothers (It counts as a movie, the episodes being so long)
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Flags of our Fathers
4. The Pacific
5. Bridge on the River Kuai

All the others are good also.

My favourite films are:

1. Das Boot (but only the 4 hours 30' version...)
2. When The Wind Blows (Ok, not a typical war film but absolutely brilliant)
3. Downfall
4. Die Brücke
5. Life is beautiful
6. The Bridge on The River Kwai
7. A Bridge Too Far
8. Apocalypse now
9. Full Metal Jacket
10. Hart's war

I must admit that I haven't seen any of Eastwoods recent war films yet, but I've been told that they are very good.
