History in Films and on TelevisionHistory in Films and on TV - Documentary Films, Historical Dramas, and history programs on PBS and the History Channel
I was going to post on another thread, but I think because of the number of documentaries I am going to post, this deserves it's own thread. Over the last few years I've watched documentaries like it's my job and I hope I can point other history lovers towards some great entertainment. I am going to post only full documentaries and documentary series. If you have any trouble figuring out the order of documentaries in a series, feel free to PM me. I will do my best to keep the documentaries categorized into ancient and modern time periods, but it could get messy. Lastly, the documentaries I post will all be in English and mostly US or UK. This is my seriously awesome list of seriously awesome full documentaries for history buffs to watch!
Ancient/Medieval:
History channel 'the Dark Ages' single documentary:
Richard Miles 'Ancient Worlds' 6 part documentary (I can only find one episode for this series still on youtube, it appears you must download it somewhere now. Excellent series, so worth mentioning.):
Excellent thread Mike, thank you. While I used to read a lot of books, I do love documentaries now in my older years (not too old). I guess you would call me "short attention span theater" material.
I wanted to add this to the list. This is amazing documentary as well as book.
If you ever wondered the origin of the English language, this is the series for you. I watched the series on History Channel and got the book after the second episode and kept up with the series each week.
Great documentary about Indigenous Australians and the complex and often bloody relations between them and the European invaders. (For the sake of your sanity, avoid the comments.)
1964 26 part documentary about the First World War. Have only watched the first episode, but apparently it contains a lot of interviews with eyewitnesses.
