Film about an allied Q-Ship in WWII

Greetings all!
My first time here. I'm a fairly regular poster over at the WWII forum (World War II Forums) which is quite an excellent forum with quite a few WWII experts. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of really excellent film buffs over there, so here I am!

I'm looking for a film I saw once, fairly recently (within the past year or so) on TCM I think. The film was, perhaps, made during WWII, but I may be mistaken about that. The film is about a crew of merchant seamen who are given the chance to crew a Q-ship (as I remember the plot). They're THRILLED at the idea of getting back at the nazis, and do so eagerly. The film may be American or British (unsure which, sorry), but I seem to remember them having some serious success with their Q-ship before the problem arises: As I recall, the problem is that they TRY to sink a U-boat, but fail for whatever reason, and then run into the SAME U-boat again, and the German captain remembers them . . . or something sort of like that.

That's all I've got. Sorry. I really hope one of you film experts can identify this one for me; it's been making me NUTS!!

TCM eh, hmm. The premise rings a bell

Could it be the movie from the 1920's called "Q ship"?

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0019298/

That the only movie I recall seeing about Q ships, anyway, and that was a while ago, lol

Hope that helps.

It COULD be "Q-Ships", but I thought it might have been more recent than that -- maybe even as recent as the 50s. For some reason it sticks in my head that it was made during WWII. I will look at "Q-Ships" ASAP.

Unfortunately I dont know of any other films on Q ships, im sorry.

I know its not what you want, but there is a good book, dealing with the exploits of the USS Asterion, which was a cargo ships, made into a Q ship, during WWII.

I haven't read it myself, but It was recommended to me by friends.

Allied Q-ships had almost no success in WWII and were withdrawn rather early in the conflict. German Q's were a bit better at it, as they were used against merchant shipping. The allies tried using them almost exclusively in anti-submarine efforts. I don't know of any movie about an allied Q-ship, but there is this one about a German one, based on a true story. Could this possibly be the one the op is recalling?

To me, there may be some confusion mixing this movie with the plot line of "The Enemy Below", which is about a duel between a German U-boat and an American destroyer that leads to the sinking of both vessels with the crews of both working together to save lives. Both films pop up on TCM somewhat regularly.
