I dont think Orlando Bloom was right for the part in Kingdom of Heaven. Haven't seem Troy, but after comments here, dont think I would bother.
But for me the strongest contestant is actually a rather enjoyable, but hugely over-shown Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, with Kevin Costner. The historical side is laughable, the casting of Sean Connery as Richard the Lionheart - ridiculous in the extreme. | Quote:

Just because it is set in the past does that make it a historical film? I don't know, I just wouldn't classify it as one. | Yes I agree with you here. Not very historical film is a documentry on history.
I have not seen 300 yet, but with some many comments about it a visit to the DVD store might be in order this weekend.

Some of my very disappointing movies would be Elizabeth the Golden Age. Kate Blanchett & Geoffrey Rush, were very good, and the costumes were lovely, but the script. I walked out the pictures and said to my husband, now I shall tell you all the mistakes!
Another, oh no is The Other Boleyn Girl. Once again the costumes were lovely, but the script was no where near correct. So many mistakes. Eric Bana, whilst not hard on the eye, did not even attempt to look like Henry V111, however he did have a kingly presence. This movie was taken from a novel, which was not very accurate, and the film was even more inaccurate than the book.
I have these movies, and now have accepted watching them and not taking them too seriously.
I stick to text books and documentaries for the real thing.

So if you can make money off of entertanment (saving private ryan) then go head and make the movie. I'm not trying to sound like a war promoter or anything but if you look at history and right now when has there ever been world peace? Or even peace in Europe lasting longer then 15years? | ya know what, i agree. this is a pretty accurate assessment.

I thought that 300 was one of the worst movies I ever saw.It was Spartan history interpreted from a Harry Potter viewpoint. I have nothing against comic books. I do not have anything against adults enjoying comic books. I do not even have anything against a movie that follows the comic book formula. I just personally do not like them. Just as I hate eating liver. However, I do not look down on those that enjoy eating liver.

There are a lot of horrible B movies out there and we are probably spared most of them.
But as far as major historical movies are concerned, my vote goes for Alexander. Simply grotesque. I couldn't stand it for more than half an hour. It was so horrible, I couldn't even wait for it to get to the battle at Gaugamela. BTW, did I miss anything?

I myself tend to regard 300 as if it were a story being told by men who fought in the Persian Wars, to their children and grandchildren. If you think of it simply as a story being told in the old heroic style of Greek legend it becomes an enjoyable little film. In this fashion it becomes much easier to reconcile the film even in the realization that Pressfield's Gates of Fire will most likely never be made.
