***RUSSIA****

Hi guys....

I'm new to history and the writing of it so i'm just looking for some help and may guidance if at all possible.

I've got a list of questions that I need to short list and then write a paper for FRIDAY!!!! I know i've left it late but I've had so much work coinciding it's been hectic.

So, here are the questions,

1. Compare and Contrast the Tsarist and Bolshevik systems of government.

2. Compare and Contrast religious policy in Late Imperial and Bolshevik Russia.

3. Compare and Contrast Stolypin and Leninís agricultural policies.

4. Compare and Contrast Witte and Leninís industrialisation policies.

5. Discuss Leninís approach to the peasants.

6. Was there a democratic tradition in Russian socialism?

7. Why did Tsarism survive in 1905 but not in February 1917?

8. Compare and Contrast the February and October Revolutions in 1917.

9. Are the Late Imperial and Bolshevik regimes best described as Ďpolice statesí?

10. Compare and Contrast the situation of the workers in Late Imperial and Bolshevik Russia.

11. Compare and contrast the situation of the peasants in Late Imperial and Bolshevik Russia.

12. Is Russian history in the period 1894-1924 best characterised by continuity or change?

13. Which regime enjoyed the most popular support: the Late Imperial or the Bolshevik?

14. Why was there a ĎRed Terrorí under Lenin but not under Nicholas II?

15. To what extent have film sources been useful for understanding Revolutionary Russia? (Your answer may focus on one topic)

Additional essay questions:

16. How did the civil war influence the development of the Bolshevik party, culture and society in the 1920s?

17. Compare and discuss the various forms of opposition during the civil war.

18. Discuss the NEPís virtues and risks for the young Soviet state.

19. Religion, prostitution, alcohol: To what extent did the Bolsheviks succeed in getting rid of them? Discuss.

20. Compare and discuss art movements in Late Imperial Russia and in early Soviet Russia.

21. Artists and writers between enthusiasm and disappointment: What made them loyal to the regime and what repelled them? Discuss.

22. What were the main aspects of womenís liberation and to what extent were they achieved?

23. Compare and discuss sexuality and family in Late Imperial and in early Soviet Russia.

24. How did the Bolsheviks try to create a New Soviet Man?

25. How does the Lenin Cult differ from personality cults we can observe today?

26. What shaped the first Soviet generation and what were the consequences of early Soviet socialisation?

I'm really not too sure at what to look at I have some books about the Red Terror question but i'm rly not convinced that this is the right one to choose. There are so many it confuses me

Does anyone have good knowledge in this area that could possibly spare me some time? Please help

So, to be clear, you need to choose one of those questions and then write an essay on it ... by Friday?

btw - Welcome!

As Robinson Crusoe would have thought, this is really a job to be done by Friday.

Anton,

To be honest, there's not really an awful lot that we can help you with until you've chosen a specific question. That's your first step. My best advice would be, given the tight schedule, to choose the question that you think you can give an answer to a.s.a.p. Are there any questions on that list that you can answer in about 50 words, now?

If I might give you one or two pointers to hel you choose:

- The questions 16 - 26 are generally more difficult than 1 - 15.
- Questions 1 - 15 are basically all 'compare and contrast' questions. The only difference between them is the focus. Find the focus of each question and decide which you would be most at ease discussing - can you give a brief outline of the answer to that question?

Now, assuming you are going to select a question soon and then ask for help with that specific question, I need to let you know that, as much as we would all very much like to help you with your homework, we have some criterea that you yourself must meet and would ask that you read these guidelines:

http://www.historum.com/showthread.php?t=5275

If you can meet the requisite criteria, I'm sure you'll find that there are numerous members here who are willing and more than capable of helping you. I myself would interested in this respect.

I would also add, for the benefit of members ready to respond, that help supplied prior to your having met the requisite criterea will be arbitrarily deleted. Help in assisting with choosing a question is not included in this.

I'd go with question 7. Lack of support from the military and the fact that the tactically weak Tsar took control during the First World War, which did not go well for Russia, meant that there was more pressure on him and other problems, such as a shortage of food at home and land hunger of the peasants were exacerbated by the war. Those are, I'd say, a couple of the main points that could go into such an essay, albeit with a lot more detail. Furthermore, mention the role that Rasputin played, which led to the lack of support from the military due to the aristocracy losing faith in the Tsar after Rasputin was effectively left to run the country while Nicholas was away visiting the troops during the war, later to be blocked off at a railway junction by his own men, with his advisors and generals suggesting that he abdicate.

It's a new rule that was added not so long ago as a means of maintaining integrity.
