Mary Celeste

Mary Celeste (also misnamed by Marie Celeste was an American merchant brigantine that was found adrift and unmanned in the Atlantic Ocean off the Azores on December 4, 1872
Someone has more information about the boat Mary Celeste.

In portuguese

O Mary Celeste (também designado, erradamente, por Marie Celeste foi um bergantim mercante norte-americano que foi encontrado à deriva e sem tripulação no Oceano Atlântico, ao largo dos Açores, em 4 de Dezembro de 1872

I think the conventional wisdom is that the crew smelled fumes from the industrial alcohol cargo, and fearing explosion took to lifeboats with the intention of returning when a breeze dissipated the fumes. The ship and boats then became separated somehow.

Another merchant ship traveling several days behind found the Mary Celeste, manned it, and took it to Gibraltar for investigation. That's where the incident would have been reported, including the lack of a crew.
