U.S. History Essay..European Conquest

I am having difficulties writing an essay and could use some help!
The Essay is: Explain the success of the European conquest of the Americas.

So far i have came up with.
: Freedom from the King and Church, but why? Taxes?
: Dense Forrest fertile land for timber and farming? Is this Correct?
: Columbus had Visions of wealth from gold and other precious metals?
: Other economic opportunity?
: Expansion? why? Was is to create a shorter trading route to china?
: Small Pox and other Pathogens? Could this be a success somehow?

I'm not sure if these point are correct or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Explain the success of the European conquest of the Americas? The success of the European conquest? Really?

Well, first and foremost, the Native Americans were living the same life-style as the Europeans had been living 3,000 years before the two met up.

There was a political/military/social/economic infrastructure behind the European conquest. The Native Americans did not have a clue what they were up against. Nor was there any way they could have had.

How much time do you have? I would recommend reading at least some of Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond

The Europeans had massive advantages over the Native Americans

Gunpowder: They had never seen anything like it and it devasted huge masses of them. They even had cannons, which were deadly against the "horde" armies of the Incas and Aztecs.

Armour: The Europeans had manufactured metal armour, and baldes of steel, while the natives predominantly wore loincloths.

Germs: Smallpox utterly devestated their poulations, because they had never been exposed to it before and they possessed no natural immune systems to counter it. It was probably the biggest single killer of the populace

Greed: Many of the expeditions to the New World were centred around find Gold an treasure.

The Europeans quickly twigged to the fact that here was land ripe for the taking, and they'd be stupid no try and grab it before their fellow Europeans did.

The main motivator for European countries in their invasion/settlement (call it what you will) of America was to stop OTHER European countries from grabbing it. A race for land.

'The Europeans' is abroad category. If you can, narrow it to a country.Spanish Conquistadors like Cortes and a few men kidnapped the Aztec emperor and slaughtered his retinue, Pizarro emulated this with the Inca. The French assimilated and practiced limited inclusion while economically dominating Canada. The Dutch and English established immediate alliances and used trade to erode classical power structures so that they could exploit fractious societies for economic gain. The common thread that binds all European 'success' in the new world is their willingness to integrate and adapt quickly. They made alliances until they were strong enough to break them and subjugate their allies. After which they expanded until they met a tribe strong enough to resist. Then they did it again
