Aonghas MacCoinnich's 'His spirit was given only to warre' is a great introduction, though the Thirty Years War isn't the only thing it covers. British and Irish Emigrants and Exiles in Europe: 1603 - 1688 is much better and broader.

This is a novel, but draws heavily on the writings of Colonel Robert Munro, who commanded McKays Regiment in Gustavus Adolphus' army;

As does this novel by G A Henty. The short version of Malcolm Graeme's adventures is shown in the Classics Illustrated version:

The Lion of the North -- Swedes and Scots save Germany for the Reformation!!

I had no idea Defoe wrote on that subject. Must search that out.

I've read it a couple of times, Tercios. Defoe is best known for Robinson Crusoe, personally I think Memoirs of a Cavalier is better.

The story is of a gentleman adventurer in the German Wars and then in the King's Army in the English Civil War.

British mercenaries in 30 years war

Scots in Sweden, by Jonas Berg, Bo Lagerkrantz and others, published by Stellan Stael Buktryckeri AB, 1962, Stockholm. The small book, 102 pages, was published for the exhibition "Scots in Sweden" at the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, Summer 1962. It is primarily about the mercenaries of the Thirty Years War, but also includes Scottish merchants in Sweden and an essay on Robert Munro by Frans G. Bengtsson. The translation is by Patrick A. Hort.

There were a substantial number of Scots soldiers fighting in the Swedish army during the thirty years war. These books would help you get started looking at them.

Steve Murdoch and Alexia Grosjean, Alexander Leslie and the Scottish Generals in the Thirty Years War (2015)

Steve Murdoch, Scotland and the Thirty Years War (2001)

Fighting for Identity: Scottish Military Experience 1550-1900 ed. Steve Murdoch and A. Mackillop (2002)

Scottish Communities Abroad in the Early Modern Period ed. Alexia Grosjean and Steve Murdoch (2005)

Good luck.
