The Dark Ages

Any suggestions on how the dark ages began? I'm speaking of a primary problem, I know the problems in europe was gold going to the east with trade, moslem and gothic conquests advancing into the european empires, and religious unrest. So any suggestions on what was a big factor in the creation of the dark age?

The 'Dark Ages,' which mainly affected certain parts of northern and western Europe, are called that because we don't have a lot of written records. So the cause in almost all cases is a lack of writing, or a lack of security for what was already written.

The second cause was normally a result of warfare or unrest, which in Britain at least was caused by local strongmen based in former regional entities' strongholds (and identities) trying to fill the power vacuum left by the retreating Roman Empire. It was difficult to establish and maintain their borders in the absence of a hegemon, so warfare became endemic as the only security these petty kingdoms enjoyed.

Andrew, there was a lengthy thread on this topic not long ago. To keep us all from repeating ourselves, I recommend reviewing this and returning with any questions.
