I thought it was called the
Harrying_of_the_North Harrying_of_the_North
? But agreed, it did have almost genocidal undertones to it.

I'm always charmed by Edward I Longshanks. The man was, simply put, totally freaking badass. Everything he did was done to the limits of his abilities. My favourite incident is War Wolf, the largest trebuchet ever built, at Stirling castle.

When the Scots saw it, they attempted to surrender, but Longshanks sent them back in until he had had time to test his new toy. Once it turned out that it smashed down walls like they were made of sand, the Scots were allowed to surrender.

You can't mess with cool like that.

How come nobody has mentioned Edward IV on the best list? He brought 12 years of peace to England in a time of bloodshed and war.

Also, I gotta slightly disagree with those who stuck Elizabeth on the best list. Elizabeth was not the greatest ruler, her advisors were! Here desicions were made by the men behind her alot of the time, such as Cecil and Dudley, especially at the start of her reign, although she did stand up impressively against the Spanish Armada.

Best:-

Edward I
Edward III
Edward IV

Worst:-

Geroge I, II, III, IV.

Nell--can you really separate the monarch from the advisors? To me, the question means the "reign", not the person of the monarch. But concur about Eliz. in general.

Among the Best: Edward III
Henry V
Victoria

Among the worst: Henry VIII (a bad man, not just a bad king)
Charles I
James II

Would you not say the same holds true for Victoria? Even more so, in fact, since she had very few real powers to exercise.
