Post Recommended Scholars and litterature on medieval slavery in Europe.

Hi!

I'm running a youtube history channel I'm planning to do a video on slavery in Europe during the middle ages(CA 476 - 1453) and I wonder if any of you guys have some literature on the subject that you would recommend.

Try Byzantine Slavery and the Mediterannean World by Youval Rotman. Now, I personally haven't read the book, but I hope it will be useful to you.

It would be a very long video unless you narrow it down a bit. The timeframe is Roman Gothic to Ottoman and the geographical range is from muslim Hispania across to Roman/Greek Constantinople to whatever happened up your way with them Viking fellas.

'Europe' is a modern concept explaining a geographical area which will encompass hundreds of different kingdoms with different slave laws

Start with the excellent Slavery in the Late Roman World, 275-467 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2011) by Kyle Harper. This is key because it's the origin point of medieval slavery and a useful book for thinking about what slavery is. For earlier medieval slavery, check out work coming from Marek Jankowiak's Dirhams for Slaves project, and the chapter "The Caging of the Peasantry" in Chris Wickham's Framing the Early Middle Ages.

It's a decent enough collection of the evidence, but it really needs more work on the definition(s) of slavery.
