Technically speaking, the Vikings were the first Euro-types to "discover" America. Nobody took notice, just as nobody noticed when they packed it in and went home.

In a certain sense of the word, they "count" as first. In every other sense, those that ramify on reality, they don't count at all for anything except maybe some glory(I know I wouldn't want to try it).
