476 - 1453 sounds about right. first = fall of west, last = fall of east. (Romans/byzantines)

I'd say the middle ages ended in different periods throughout Europe...

Starting in Italy with Petrarch in the mid 14th century and the spark of humanism and the Renaissance...

As the Renaissance spread through Western Europe I would say that is when the middle ages came to end.

So it's location specific, not time specific.

(you could even argue that the Renaissance in Italy began before Petrarch, as many do.. but I personally associate the start of the Renaissance with the work of Petrarch *not to be confused with the 12th century 'renaissance' either*)
