Manuel Palaiologos quote

Not too long ago the Pope (I don't even know which one) used a quotation of Byzantine Emperor Manuel Palaiologos with the result of widespread criticism of said Pope and his lecture. The reasons why, I cannot find after quite a while of searching, but it was a modern controversy that brought quite a bit of uproar (keep in mind, the Pope said this ten or twenty years ago).

Does anyone know any info on this? I'm curious as to what exactly happened.

Also not sure which section this should go in.

That would be Pope Benedict, giving a lecture in Regensburg in 2006.
