Byzantine Empire - Your Thoughts

I ask that when you think of the Byzantine Empire, what comes to mind?

When I think of it, I think of:
  • the Cyrillic alphabet
  • Justinian Code
  • The preservation of Christianity
  • it being the Eastern half of the Roman Empire

The Imperial Court, with all its ritual and intrigue, at its height in the 9th and 10th centuries.

....sexual impropriety with fowl.....really.....that's the first thing.

The second thing would be the Hagia Sophia

Cyrillic alphabet particularly is connected with Cyril and Methodius's students and Clement of Ohrid - Bulgarians/Bulgarian Slavs who founded refuge in Bulgaria and were supported by Knyaz Boris I. This alphabet couldn't exist if there wasn't support from Boris I and Bulgaria.

Bizarre sense of fashion, walls, people being blinded or tortured, Viking bodyguards, a powerful sense of nostaglia and surviving tradition.

Why bad dressing sense? I was in impression that unlike contempory europeans they used to wear rich colourful exotic clothes.
