That's one massive subject. Any geographical limits?

I think we need a chronological and geographical limite. If not we'll have Belisarius on the same list as Tamerlane.

None, I delieratly left it open for geography and time span as to gain variance in opinion.I find that people often only see history in their own perspective of what part of the world they live in or on what history is available to them or what period appeals to them.My aim is to provoke discussion.lol

Since you left it too open so personal preferences would win over any criteria based analysis.

My choice is: Chhatrapati Shivaji

For the magnitude of his success, ingenious utilizations of resources/tactics, overcoming bigger rivals, creating an empire from scratch & his lasting legacy which ensures that even today politicians across all major political parties have to take his name for getting votes in a state with >114 M population(more than many BIG countries)

Agree.

But I would vote for Subutai.

I read an interesting book about Subotai a few months back. It's interesting how much of our modern military tactics such as the emphasis on speed, maneuverability, and envelopment were influenced by armies like the Mongols. Subotai himself seems to have been a very innovative and adept commander.

The book was titled 'Genghis Khan's Greatest General: Subotai the Valiant', by Richard A. Gabriel. It's not very long, but provided a pretty good overview of Subotai's career.
