How did the Barzanis survive so long where other Kurdish leaders couldnt

I mean how did they manage to survive so long where other Kurdish chieftains/generals/leaders ended up getting killed. What did they do differently that helped their longevity especially something as brutal as Baathist regime massacres.

They were very competent and a lot of them were abroad. They also shrewdly made deals with other countries, including Turkey, where they get a huge amount of their personal funding, eliminating some enemies and positioning themselves as the "moderates" in the Kurdish struggle. Their biggest danger was the pacification campaigns under Saddam but those were just a single shot and they were able to avoid that. The Barzanis have a more cordial relationship with Turkey, especially with the government currently in power, than the other Kurdish groups. As for the war with the easterners, the Barzani faction was stronger than the collection of Iranian-backed Kurdish militias against them and able to take the upper hand so it is unlikely Barzani himself would have died in that struggle.
