The Practice of Impalement in the Ottoman Empire

While reading a description of a Serbian noble named Nikola (Nicholas) Skobaljić, I've came upon a claim that he was the first known Serb to get impaled by the Ottomans (1454). It came across my mind that I did not know how and when was the punishment of impalement undertaken. I also didn't find anything useful in literature. So does anyone know about this and did the practice even have a common "ritual" or was simply undertaken ad hoc? Literature, regardless of language, is most welcome as well.

I've heard that he most likely came up with the impalement punishment after seeing it done by the Ottomans while he was held captive in Turkey with his brother Radu.
