The Great Mosque in Erbil (Arbil), Iraqi-Kurdistan. Actually built several years ago but it looks quite majestic.

could it have been by design or by architectural/structural necessity ?

I think the outer part of the dome on the Al-Aqaa Mosque is a bit ugly, though the rest of the mosque is nice and the interior is beautiful. In regards to mosques , I think the blue mosque is the nicest I've ever seen. The ones in Tatarstan and Morocco are nice too.

The dome is as big as dome of Hagia Sophia. Perfectly lightened and well shaped.
Inferior space isn't captured by collumns.
With her magestic look, It is structurally better than all the mosques in Istanbul, including Hagia Sophia.

I recall reading that the Cordoba Grand Mosque/Cathedral was built ,and was inspired by old Roman architecture (well, atleast the archways).

But my favourites are the Ottoman style mosques. Also liked the Masjid an-Nabawi for its interior, but the later is not too historical in its current form, rather modern.
In Hungary only few historical masjids remained from Ottoman period. these two are still used by muslim worshippers

It is a tiny mosque in Izmir. in the centre of the city.
When I was in Safranbolu where is a historical Turkish town, I surprised to see a mosque built up on a river. I have no idea why they would built a mosque there. Thought It is not odd thing in the town considering that most of the buildings were set up on deep canyons.
Giant mosques are admireable of course, but I love tiny one. They are so cute.
