Another character came up to him and said, "Is that cake poisoned? I don't want to be poisoned like Salah al-din in 1179." The author then explained that he watched a documentary about Salah al-din where apparently someone tried poisoning the guy in 1179. That's all the author wrote about it. No description or links as sources. Who did this? Why did this person want Salah al-din dead? Inform me, historiumers! | | |

allegedly it was the Hashashins or Assassins of Masyaf. saladin was trying to gain control of them but they were determined to stay independent. the story gos that as saladin's army was camped near Masyaf an assassin somehow managed to sneak into saladin's camp and tried to kill him with a dagger, saldin awoke in time and managed to struggle with him long enough for his bodyguards to come and save him, latter on saldin placed double the guard around his tent, then he awoke to find some freshly backed poison cakes by his bedside, the same sort the assassins were known to give, it had a message telling him to leave now while he still had the chance, terrified, saladin immediately left along with his army and never bothered the assassins again

Less an attempt to poison him, more a point to send a message.

the story gos that it was the assassin leader himself Rashid ad-Din Sinan 'The old man of the mountain' that had placed the cakes in his tent, you read about him and the event here Rashid ad-Din Sinan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
i find the story interesting as it adds more mystery to the Hashashins, their an interesting group because the little we know about them is mostly based on speculation and myths

No way! Based on my research, he didn't died with a cake in 1179. That would be so rubbish if he did. I don't really take this literally, I know this is a joke.

Yes, the Hashashins were pretty much the al qaeda at the time, saladin had enemies even within the muslim world, since he conquered pinical parts of the fatimad empire,
