The physical appearance of northern Arabs

Why do most northern Arabs (Iraqis, Syrians, Lebanese, Jordanese, Egyptian, and North Africans) look more like non-Arab Mediterraneans and sometimes even South Europeans than they do Central or East Asian? In fact, they look nothing like East Asians.

Intermarriage with the Romans and Greeks (Byzantinians) is a possible example. I shall follow this topic closely.

I guess one reason would be that Mesopotamia was a travel route used by Europeans, and Africans. Another would amount to the invasions and conquered lands. Whether we're talking about the Greeks, Romans, British, French... There has to be a lot of European blood there. Actually, if I recall correctly, among the original inhabitants of Mesopotamia the Akkadians were mostly caucasian.

Why should they look like East Asians? It's too far! Nor they look like Central Asians like the Turkic tribes, who are obviously fairer.

Or more possibly Arabization of the local northern Midlle Eastern populations (yes including Greeks). Plus, the crusaders, especially around Lebanon.

Not sure... Maybe it has something to do with the Deserts and Himalayas creating a land barrier making migrations of different people more difficult than normal?

"Mr. Baldwin draws a marked distinction between the modern Mahomedan Semitic population of Arabia and their great Cushite, Hamite, or Ethiopian predecessors. The former, he says, ‘are comparatively modern in Arabia,’ they have ‘appropriated the reputation of the old race,’ and have unduly occupied the chief attention of modern scholars." - Charles Hardwick, Traditions Superstitions and Folklore, 1872

The simple answer is intermarriage with Byzantine and Slavic peoples.

Tariq Berry has been on a "crusade" in his book "The Unknown Arabs" (2007) and on his blog Save The True Arabs to settle once and for all the *true* appearance of the ancient and medieval Arabs.

Well I guess it is also because they were mediterranean people too. There were people in these areas before the Arabs came, and they did not disappear like that, they just converted to Islam and adopted the arabic language. Not to mention the presence of southern Europeans (mainly Greeks and southeastern Europeans, possibly some Romans or even some germanic people in north Africa etc.) centuries before the expansion of Islam. During the ancient era, the mediterranean sea was not a barrier between civilizations, there was one distinctly mediterranean civilization composed of different cultures and people.

This seems about as credible as those who use the description of Muhammad as red-haired and with a fair complexion to claim that he had northern european origins.

Say what you want about his thesis, he does utilize a plethora of primary sources. And for anybody whose met Arabs from places like Yemen, UAE, Oman, etc., its hardly as ill-conceived as a European Muhammad.

And when I visited Dubai, I noticed that the UAE Arabs, mostly, look nothing like northern Arabs.

That could be due to environment, even though I don't recall Baghdad being any less hot or sunny than Dubai.
