"Pure" "genetic" human groups is fundamentally just some long outdated utterly absurd racist pseudo-science, especially when the term "Jews" is included in the equation.
We all come from some common paternal ancestor from no more than 60,000 years ago and a maternal ancestor from no more than 200,000 years ago (nope, in all likelihood they were not a couple); in both cases a mere instant by biological standards.
Amazing as it may sound, all human pedigrees have always been extremely intermixed; that's exactly the reason why all of us are far, far from the theoretical one trillion plus ancestors for each one of us just some 40 generations ago (i.e. barely one millennium).

Anyone who is familiar with Jews could easily spot one, which suggest a common genetics and past.İt has proven by the genetics as Vera mentioned.
Two major Jewish groups Sephardi and Ashkenazi have more middle eastern input than Europan that they got within the last two milleniums.
But most of the middle eastern inputs are non-Semitic.
There is nothing such as ''pure jewish'',but Kohens looks the least mixed group, while Beta İsrael of Etiopia is just converts that originaly native African.Similar situation is abouth some South Asian Jewish groups
Bed news for the black Jews who suffer from discrimination in İsrael.

Can someone join the Jewish religion if they want or do they have to be born into it?

However, conversion is possible, but I have heard it is a long and tedious process.

In the past, the jews did convert people and were quite active in this regard. But now, for centuries, they have pretty much remained quite a close group (except that there has been many intermarriages of course, since two centuries ago). And some conversions do occur, especially as some people convert to marry a jew. It is quite rare however since in western countries, jews are quite secular, while in muslims countries, muslim will never accept that one of their people converts to judaism to marry someone.
There has also been some call for the reconversion of people of jewish descent who are now christian or muslim (like the descendant of the spanish jews who converted to christianity for example).

There is not such thing in Judaism as "just converts". That is why the process is so complicated.
The Falashmura (Stiopian Jews) are indeed decedents of converts, and of "mixed" marriages, but it happened before diaspora. These Jews are just as Jewish as any other - genetically (descendents of Jews). But they are mostly not of Semitic origin.
