As for thefts in Libya, how can you blame the West for this? We don't even have any troops over there!

Associated Press (11 January 2009): Egypt’s Antiquities Chief, Zahi Hawass recently unveiled a ten-inch bronze statue believed to be an ancient Mesopotamian fertility goddess looted from Iraq. Hawass stated that an Egyptian man working in Jordan was caught trying to smuggle the statue into Egypt through Nuweiba port. Hawass has stated his office has been tracking looted Iraqi artifacts since the Invasion of Iraq in 2003 and has recovered around 5,000 items. An advocate for the return of Egyptian artifacts, Hawass refuses to deal with any museum that also deals in stolen Iraqi antiquities.

Besides, a lot of it is done probably through the cover of international bodies, probably aide agencies and the like. Not necessarily by regular soldiers. In Iraq though, yes regular soldiers did loot, and take "souvenirs".

The amount of artifacts stolen by US Forces pales in comparison when compared to the amount stolen by its own people.
In the wiki artical the figure given is just for items entering the US their is no indication that they came from US soldiers, they may just as easily have come from Iraqi's seeking to sell them on the US market.
The wiki artical also states that 400 items were intecepted in one vehicle heading for the Iranian border, that was hardly likleyto have anything to do with an international organisation at all.
This topic deserves its own thread, if you would care to start one.

What are your thoughts on this man, and his accomplishments? Has anyone read his autobiography? |
Last night I was watching a French documentary about a fantastic dig in Gaza. (a 5th century monastery, with stunning mosaics)
Mentioned was how Moshe Dyan had 'accumulated' the world's best collection of terracotta sarchophagi from Gaza during the Six Day War. That does not seem very honourable,if true.
Apart from that,I know little about the man.In his prime he reminded me physically,of THE best soldier I ever met; Major Felix Fazekis MC, First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (my unit).
